machismo etymology

[Spanish, from macho, male; see macho.]
In the popular press, in reference materials and in academic literature, the term machismo has been used in many different, quite often contradictory, ways. Even if no one can say for sure where the term came from or what it means, it appears to be a central concept in discussions of the roles, status, rights, responsibilities, influences and moral positions of men and women. The most oft-cited definition seems to have come from Evelyn Stevens, who described machismo as a "cult of virility" whose chief characteristics are "exaggerated aggressiveness and intransigence in male-to-male interpersonal relationships and arrogance and sexual aggression in male-to-female relationships."

Machismo by a definition Dr. Yenan Silen

Machismo is an ideology of values and beliefs that promote the idea that women are weaker and men are stronger, thus the head of the house. Masculinity is identified with power and control, which manifest as physical, economical and psychological power with the objective to maintain "the man" in dominion/control over his domain: women, children and properties. This dominion must be maintained at any expense, to lose ones' dominion will be equal to be weak and a failure. Thus, a "machismo" despises anything that is related to feminism. The woman is an object to posses, an object to provide sexual gratification and to serve him. Women are responsible of the household work. The basic roles in family interaction are for the man to work outside of the home and bring money for the household expenses and for the woman to work inside the house maintenance, which includes children and husband. Women are to obey her husband, boyfriend, fiance or father and boss. Women need the male protection because they are weak, ignorant and proneness to being deceived. From this point of view Eve is the responsible for the human fall and condemned by God to have children and be dominated by her husband.
